Kroger - Enterprise Tableau Deployment

We upgraded Kroger's Tableau Server to high availability, built executive pricing dashboards, and delivered the retailer's first major BI rollout to leadership.

Kroger is one of the largest retailers in the United States with 300,000+ employees. They needed to upgrade their Tableau Server infrastructure, build high-exposure pricing dashboards, and successfully launch BI capabilities to executives—all without disrupting operations.

What We Built

We delivered three major workstreams: a Tableau Server upgrade from single-node to high availability, executive pricing dashboards optimized for performance, and hands-on training across multiple technical teams.

Engineering Highlights

High availability migration. We worked with DBAs, networking engineers, and Tableau admins to transition from a single-node Tableau Server to a fully clustered HA environment. Zero downtime during the cutover.

Data architecture consolidation. We helped architect multiple data sources into a single, unified data model. This gave dashboard consumers one source of truth instead of conflicting metrics from siloed systems.

Performance optimization. Complex dashboards that caused performance headaches were refactored for speed. We reduced redundancy in both the ETL layer and the visualization layer.

Workflow automation. We established workflow algorithms with IT managers and environment admins to avoid break-fix stops. Administrative scripts now handle routine maintenance automatically.

Cross-Team Collaboration

The engagement required coordinating with developers, data architects, DBAs, Tableau developers, and business analysts. We whiteboarded solutions, sold them to the technical team, then presented to 20+ business consultants. This was Kroger’s first major push for Tableau at the executive level.

Outcomes

  • Tableau Server upgraded to high availability cluster
  • Executive pricing dashboards delivered on deadline
  • Multiple data sources unified into single data model
  • Ongoing support extended at client request
I had the opportunity to work with Tyler while working on a Tableau project at Kroger. The BI project we were working on included complex dashboards that created headaches from a performance perspective along with server-related issues. With Tyler's vast knowledge of Tableau, we were able to optimize the performance of the dashboards and reduce any redundancy that existed. He was quick to whiteboard a solution, sold it to the tech team of ETL developers, and then sold it to a group of 20 savvy business consultants. It was the first major push for Tableau in Kroger, and we would not have been successful with our deadline if it wasn't for Tyler's solutions and leadership. I cannot thank Tyler enough for his help onsite with Kroger. I would highly recommend Dev3lop to anyone seeking technical help.
