GoPro receives tens of millions of records daily from customer devices. Their rapidly expanding workforce needed a Tableau Server architecture that could scale with their big data environment—plus automation to reduce manual administration overhead.
What We Built
We transitioned GoPro’s Tableau Server from a single node to a high availability cluster, developed custom automation scripts for content management, and modified the server frontend with custom HTML and CSS styling.
Engineering Highlights
Cluster migration. We established a sprint and scrum cadence to coordinate the migration. This involved spinning up multiple virtual machine environments and working closely with networking and infrastructure engineers to configure the new clustered system.
Custom automation scripts. We wrote a PowerShell-based archiving algorithm that queries the Tableau repository and automatically moves stale content based on interaction timestamps. No more manual cleanup.
Server frontend customization. We edited the Tableau Server HTML and CSS directly—an unsupported but successful modification that gave GoPro a branded, polished server experience. The changes are visible in the documentation from the engagement.
Team training. We trained software and data engineers on Tableau Server architecture, optimization techniques, and automation best practices. The team was equipped to maintain and extend the system after we left.
Timeline
The entire Tableau Server upgrade, migration, and optimization was completed in one day. The engagement finished three times faster than the team expected—freeing up time for additional feature work.
