Honest Limits, Real Workarounds
Looker Studio’s price is unbeatable, but free comes with constraints, and pretending otherwise leads to bad architecture. Community connectors vary widely in quality and can break without notice. Data blending across sources is limited and gets slow fast. There is no true semantic layer, so metric definitions live inside each report unless you push them upstream. And direct connections to large GA4 or Sheets sources hit sampling and quota walls.
The workaround for nearly all of this is the same: put BigQuery in the middle. Land your sources in BigQuery, model the metrics once in SQL or dbt, and point Looker Studio at clean, pre-aggregated tables. Reports get faster, numbers get consistent, and connector fragility stops being your reporting layer’s single point of failure. - Reports that take a minute to load. Usually a blend or a direct GA4 connection doing work BigQuery should do. We restructure the data flow and reports render in seconds.
