Semantic Models Come First
Most Power BI problems are model problems. Reports that take minutes to load, DAX measures nobody can explain, and totals that disagree between pages usually trace back to a semantic model that grew without a plan.
We build models the way Microsoft’s own guidance recommends: star schemas with clean fact and dimension tables, explicit relationships, and measures written once in a shared model instead of copied into every report. Power Query handles shaping at import; DAX handles calculation at query time. Keeping those responsibilities separate is the difference between a model that scales and one that gets rebuilt every quarter.
When source data is the bottleneck — slow refreshes, brittle Excel handoffs, gateways timing out against overloaded databases — we fix it upstream through data pipeline work rather than papering over it with more DAX.
Gateways, Refresh, and Fabric
Enterprise Power BI lives or dies on operations. We configure on-premises data gateways with clustering where uptime matters, tune refresh schedules so they finish before the morning standup, and set up incremental refresh so a 200-million-row table does not reload from scratch every night.
Microsoft is steering the platform toward Fabric, and we help teams plan for that: understanding what OneLake and Direct Lake mode change about your architecture, which workloads justify Fabric capacity, and which are fine on Pro licenses. We give straight answers on licensing cost — sometimes the right recommendation is not to upgrade yet.
Cross-Platform Perspective
Our founder is a former Tableau Software Professional Services consultant, and we run an active Tableau consulting practice alongside our Power BI work. That dual fluency matters in two situations: when you are migrating between platforms and need someone who understands both sides of the conversion, and when you run both tools and need governance that keeps metric definitions consistent across them.
We have done the operational side of BI at enterprise scale — including a Tableau Server high-availability migration for GoPro — and we bring the same production discipline to Power BI deployments: workspaces organized by lifecycle, deployment pipelines for dev/test/prod, and row-level security tested rather than assumed.
